Edina at Centennial
3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29

Anyone doubt the Hornets now? No. 1-2A Edina opened its Class 2A title defense with a big weekend, routing Holy Family Catholic (11-0) and edging Wayzata in a shootout to win the Turkey Trot championship (a game that officially goes in the books as a tie).

The Hornets showed explosive offense against the Fire, with Matt Masterman scoring four goals, Casey Dornbach netting three goals and an assist, Dylan Malmquist adding two goals and two assists and Garrett Wait helping with six assists. They’re the veteran leaders on this year’s Edina powerhouse and appear plenty capable of continuing the dynasty.

The sledding was tougher in the championship against Wayzata, but Wait had two goals and goaltender Kobi Boe came up big in the shootout, stopping four of five Trojans’ chances.

No. 20-2A Centennial continues the tough opening stretch for Edina. The Cougars have qualified for the last two state tournaments and return 10 letterwinners. Centennial should bring a strong offense, led by senior captain Connor Lovick and junior captain Tyler Nyman, who combined for 25 goals and 58 points last year.

But it’s defensively where the Cougars really shine. Veteran defensemen Ryan Meany, Colton Berg and Cole Arends anchor a blue line crew that is tough in its own zone, yet ready and willing to jump into the offensive fray.
