Eden Prairie at Maple Grove
7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25

It was a tough opening weekend for No. 10-2A Maple Grove, which scored just three goals in losing a pair of Turkey Trot Tournament games at the Plymouth Ice Center (4-1 to Wayzata and 4-2 to Holy Family Catholic). And it doesn’t get any easier this week when the Crimson host No. 8-2A Eden Prairie on Tuesday night.

Maple Grove expects to be a state tournament contender out of Section 5 and has some offensive firepower, including 20-goal scorer Josh Passolt, but the Crimson had trouble generating much offense in the opening weekend. Passolt and Sam Franta combined for 17 shots on goal in the two games with each scoring once, but the rest of the team had just one goal and 25 shots. The goaltending duel between senior Cal McKenney and junior Brady Goodman is still ongoing after each allowed four goals in his first start.

Eden Prairie coach Lee Smith has his own goaltending dilemma, but for a different reason. Smith doesn't have two veterans battling it out, but rather a host of untested goalies looking to replace last year’s starter, Jake Gerdes, and backup Erik Evers, both of whom graduated. The Eagles do have the benefit of a strong defense, anchored by Brady Schoo, Marc Sullivan, Andy Aguilar and Brett Boldenow.
