Edina at Lakeville North
7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4

Despite graduation losses and a couple of key early departures, Edina doesn't seem ready to give up its crown. The Hornets' 11-0 whitewashing of Holy Family Catholic on the first day of the season sounded that alarm loud and clear to the rest of the state. Edina followed up that victory with two more and a tie against a difficult schedule.

Senior Matt Masterman may be working his way into the Mr. Hockey discussion with his fast start, scoring eight goals and three assists. But he’s second on the Hornets in scoring to junior Garrett Wait (three goals, nine assists), who had six assists in the win over Holy Family and has verbally committed to the University of Minnesota. Casey Dornbach has five goals and three assists, while Malmquist has added four goals and three assists. The machine keeps rolling on.

Lakeville North had a more difficult time in its opener. The Panthers defeated Section 1 rival Farmington 6-5 in overtime on Jack Poehling’s second goal of the game. The Poehling brothers line scored five of the six goals (Nick Poehling added a hat trick) and will be counted on to keep the offense rolling against the Hornets.
