Brett Boldenow’s goal less than 7 minutes into the third period gave Eden Prairie momentum as the Eagles attempted to comeback from a two-goal deficit against Edina in a nonconference matchup at Braemar Ice Arena Saturday night.

Hornets senior forward Parker Mismash made sure Eden Prairie didn’t stay in control for long. Mismash skated into the Eagles’ zone and scored just 25 seconds after Eden Prairie.

“After (the Eagles’ goal), I just said we were going to go score a goal, and we did,” Mismash said. “We took (the momentum) right from them.”

It was the only goal on the night for Mismash, who also had three assists including one on Dylan Malmquist’s overtime goal that sealed Edina’s 4-3 victory over Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie in the final game of the Edina Holiday Classic.

Hornets’ coach Curt Giles called Mismash a tenacious competitor.

“(Mismash) has an explosive personality, and he wants to win extremely bad and he competes extremely hard,” Giles said.

Explosive could also describe Mismash’s offensive ability. He has seven goals and eight assists in 10 games for Edina (8-1-1), ranked No. 2 in the Class 2A coaches poll.

Mismash’s competitive drive is hard to ignore. Hornets senior goalie Kobi Boe said he wanted a victory over No. 6-2A Eden Prairie (7-2-0) and didn’t care how Edina won.

Mismash felt differently.

“I don’t think it should’ve gone into overtime,” Mismash said. “I was on the ice when (the Eagles) scored that (game-tying) goal. Thank God we won.”

The Hornets’ line of Mismash, Malmquist and junior Garrett Wait is a winning combination. The trio accounted for all of Edina’s goals against Eden Prairie. Wait finished with two goals and one assist, while Malmquist had three assists in addition to the game-winning goal.

Mismash moved to Edina when he was in the eighth grade and has played with Malmquist and Wait only a few years. The group, however, has developed a strong bond, Giles said.

“They’re good offensive players, and they’ve obviously found a chemistry with that line,” Giles said. “They move the puck well, and they’re good skaters.”

Mismash plans to play hockey after high school, but isn’t committed to a program yet.

“He’s a good player,” Giles said. “He’ll play someplace.”

First Report

Senior forward Dylan Malmquist scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Edina defeated Eden Prairie 4-3 in the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Ice Arena on Saturday.

Malmquist pushed the puck through a pileup in front of Eagles goalie Shaun Durocher with 3:20 remaining in sudden-death overtime, helping the Hornets finish 3-0 in their home tournament.

Malmquist also had three assists and Garret Wait finished with two goals and an assist for Edina, ranked No. 2 in the Class 2A coaches poll. Parker Mismash tallied a goal and three assists.

Wait’s first goal gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead with 1.1 seconds left the first period. Mismash and Malmquist earned assists on the goal.

Neither team scored in the second period, but they made up for in the third with a flurry of goals.

Mismash and Malmquist set up Wait for his second goal just 40 seconds into the third period, giving Edina a 2-0 lead.

Brett Boldenow netted a power-play goal for the No. 16-2A Eagles at the 6:45 mark of the final period. The Hornets responded quickly as Mismash scored 25 seconds later to regain a two-goal advantage.

Casey Mittelstadt converted on an Eden Prairie power play, sending a slap shot from the arch of the red line into the net and bringing the Eagles to within one.

With 38 seconds to play, Eden Prairie pulled Durocher and the Eagles forced overtime when Michael Graham scored.

Durocher had 26 saves on the night. Edina’s Kobi Boe had 22.
