Kobi Boe’s choice of facial hair has become derisive, but the play of the Edina goalie has not.

The Hornets’ senior sports a developing mustache that his parents disapprove, but he won’t get rid of it.

“I love the ‘stache,” Boe said. “My dad hates it, my mom definitely hates it, but I’ve got to keep it.”

Edina doesn’t seem to have an issue with Boe’s upper lip, considering how well he’s played. Boe made 29 saves to help the Hornets extend their undefeated streak to 14 games with a 5-0 victory over Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie on Thursday night.

The Hornets (17-1-2, 4-0), ranked No. 2 in the Class 2A coaches poll, remained atop the league standings with the win over the No. 5-2A Eagles (12-8-0, 1-3-0).

The victory was the fourth shutout of the season for Boe, who is 11-0-1 during Edina’s unbeaten run.

Unfortunately for Boe’s parents, the win only steeled their son’s resolve to keep from breaking out a razor.

The mustache, however, is just one of Boe’s numerous quirks Boe.

“There’s plenty of (them)” he said with a laugh.

“I love to dance before games,” Boe added. “I can’t really breakdance, but I give it my all.”

Senior defenseman Paul Meyer said Boe’s idiosyncrasy

 doesn’t change off the ice.

“You just know it’s him, walking in the halls at school,” Meyer said. “He just has a way about him.”

Boe’s enthusiasm may be rubbing off on Meyer, who scored his first goal of the season and then reveled in his teammates’ embrace even though he didn’t see the puck go in the net.

“I just saw my teammates raise their arms and I decided to celebrate with them a little bit,” said Meyer, who leads all Edina defensemen with 13 assists this season.

Boe is in his first season as a starter after backing up Andrew Rokohl last year and playing on the junior varsity his sophomore season.

“We knew he was a good goaltender,” Edina coach Curt Giles said. “We saw him a lot last year as a backup.”

Giles also said Boe’s growth as a player helped him nail down the starting job.

The growth is evident as Boe has flourished in the starter’s role. He is 14-1-2 with an impressive 1.78 goals against average, which is tied for ninth in the state.

“He matured enough that he really wanted to take charge of (the starting job),” Giles said. “He’s done a real nice job.”

Boe and his teammates were headed to a planned weightlifting session following the victory over Eden Prairie, a decision that Giles said was not strictly made by the coaches.

“They’re committed to it,” Giles said. “I give them an awful lot of credit because they want to be as good as they can be.”

Boe’s commitment, it seems, is just as strong when it comes to his facial hair.
