Forward Dylan Malmquist, in his fourth year with Edina, is known for his ability to compete all over the ice, provide an offensive spark and create plays out of nothing.

The Notre Dame commit also brings strong offensive vision and passing.

And there's yet another aspect of Malmquist’s game that sets the Mr. Hockey finalist apart from most players.

“His biggest thing is his attitude,” Edina coach Curt Giles said of what makes Malmquist dangerous. “He works hard, works extremely hard, he’s got great skill, but I think the combination of a kid who really wants to play and really wants to do good things, plus with the good skills he’s got, it really is a good combination.”

Malmquist displayed a sharp mental edge as he scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 victory over Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie in the regular season finale for both teams at Braemar Arena in Edina on Saturday.

The No. 2 ranked Hornets finished 22-1-2 on the regular season while the No. 5 ranked Eagles finished 16-9-0.

Malmquist, who has scored two goals in two of Edina's three wins over Eden Prairie this season, agreed his no-quit attitude is what often makes the difference.

“You’ve got to come ready to play, you’ve got to know what you’re here for,” Malmquist said. “I feel like I’m trying to bring that. [Matt] Masterman and I being the captains, we try to bring that to the table, and I feel like I’ve done a good job doing that this year.”

Malmquist came ready to play from opening puck drop as he streaked down the ice, took a pass from teammate Parker Mismash and buried the puck in the Eden Prairie net just 27 seconds into the game. His goal came on the first shot for either team and set the tone for the rest of the game.

“Obviously, you’d like to get off to a good start, and if you can get [a goal] 27 seconds into it, it’s an awfully nice way to get started,” Giles said.

But even with the early lead, Malmquist and Edina weren't about to let up. For most of the period, the Hornets put heavy pressure on the Eagles goal. The Hornets finished with 14 shots in the opening period.

Eden Prairie spent most of first period chasing the faster Hornets, and the Eagles didn't register their first shot until there were four minutes were left in the first period.

Malmquist and Edina continued right where they left off early in the second. Six minutes in, he centered a pass to teammate Henry Bowlby who buried the puck in the Eden Prairie net before Eagles goaltender Shaun Durocher even realized the puck was in the net.

Malmquist eventually scored a second goal with 6:02 left in regulation as Edina’s leading goal scorer lifted his team to a second consecutive shutout of Eden Prairie.

The Hornets have won the past two Class 2A state championships, and Malmquist played a key role in both title runs. But, he said he doesn’t feel burdened to extend Edina’s stretch of state success.

“I’m not worried about that at all, and I don’t think anyone on my team is,” Malmquist said of continuing the Hornets legacy. “We’re just worried about what’s in front of us right now, and we’re looking forward to our first section game.”

In his third year as a varsity starter for the Hornets, the future Notre Dame forward ultimately believes Edina’s situation heading into the 2015 isn’t much different than the past two seasons, and that isn’t a bad thing.

"We just have the same mentality and we go into every game trying to win it and we follow the system and it works," Malmquist said.

First Report

Edina senior forward Dylan Malmquist scored two goals and added an assist as he led the Hornets to a 3-0 victory over Eden Prairie on Saturday at Braemar Arena in Edina in the regular season finale for both teams.

The No. 2-ranked Hornets finished 22-1-2 while the No. 5 ranked Eagles closed the regular season with a 16-9-0. Edina, the two-time defending state Class 2A champion, also finished as the Lake Conference champion.

The Hornets didn’t waste any time as Malmquist streaked down the ice, took a pass from teammate Parker Mismash and buried the puck in the Eden Prairie net just 27 seconds into the game. The Eagles couldn’t handle Edina’s speed for most of the game.

Edina senior Henry Bowlby took a centering pass from Malmquist and scored with 11:00 left in the second period. Malmquist extended the Edina lead to 3-0 when he scored from just outside the crease with 6:02 left in the third.

Malmquist finished the regular season with team highs of 26 goals and 66 points.

Eden Prairie also struggled on offense. The Eagles didn't register a shot on goal until four minutes remained in the first period. They finished with 20 shots on Edina goaltender Kobi Boe.

Eden Prairie's Shaun Durocher made 29 saves.

The victory was Edina's third over Eden Prairie in as many tries this season. The Hornets have defeated the Eagles by scores of 4-3 (overtime), 5-0 and 3-0.
