Elk River has sped to a 6-0 start this season and owns victories over No. 16-2A Centennial (5-3 on Nov. 7) and No. 14-2A Dodge County (2-0 on Nov. 12) thanks to a balanced attack.

Shae-Elle McLean (6-10-16) and Breanna Simon (5-10-15) lead the No. 9-2A Elks in points, while Kelsey King (4-4-8), Reilly Springman (3-6-9), Raelyn Korinek (3-4-7) and Madison Bizal (4-1-5) have also aided in the scoring.

Elk River has converted seven of 12 power-play chances this season and has gotten solid play from goaltenders Megan Jung (3-0, 1.67 GAA, .906 save percentage) and Michaela Gould (3-0, 1.67 GAA, .904 save percentage).

The Elks are coming off a 20-7-1 season that included a 13-4-1 record and a third-place finish in the Northwest Suburban Conference. Elk River also earned the top seed in the Class 2A, Section 7 playoffs and made a run to the championship game, where it fell to second-seeded Andover 5-4 in overtime.

Maple Grove won last year’s meeting with Elks 2-1 in overtime en route to the Northwest Suburban title.

Crimson junior and Minnesota commit Taylor Wente helped secure a 3-2 overtime victory over Centennial on Nov. 17 with two goals, including the game-tying score in the third period and the game-winner in overtime. Maple Grove outshot the Cougars 55-23.

Wente (3-5-8) and sophomore Katie Denecke (5-0-5) have led the offense for the No. 7-2A Crimson (3-1-1), whose only loss came to No. 3-2A Edina in the season opener. Denecke broke out for four goals in an 8-1 win over Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes on Nov. 19.

Maple Grove picked up a 3-1 win over league rival Blaine on Nov. 21 behind two goals from Erin Roehl and one from Sydnee Hanson. Goalie Breanna Blesi stopped 22 shots in the win.
