Breck at Mahtomedi
7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9

Breck and Mahtomedi seem destined for top seeds in the section playoffs, and the Class 1A powerhouses square off in perhaps a preview of something to come next month at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The No. 1-1A Mustangs (20-3-0) have been outstanding in all measures of their game.

Breck is outscoring its opponents by an average of nearly 4.5 goals per game, while its special teams units have been simply outstanding, ranking among the state's best. The Mustangs are converting at 43.3 percent on the power play, and the penalty kill is operating at 88.6 percent.

Breck hasn't lost in 2016 and take a 10-game winning streak into Tuesday night against the Zephyrs. The Mustangs are led in scoring by Mr. Hockey finalist Chase Ellingson, who begins the week with 28 goals and 58 points.

Mahtomedi (14-6-2) was busy last week facing some of the state’s best teams. The No. 4-1A Zephyrs lost to No. 3-2A Stillwater (4-0) and earned ties with No. 10-2A Hill-Murray (1-1) and No. 15-2A St. Thomas Academy (3-3).

Breck will be the last test the Zephyrs face before entering the postseason.

Mahtomedi is scoring by committee, as four different players have at least 10 goals and are averaging better than a point per game.
