After decades as a hockey powerhouse, attrition took its toll on the Greenway program.

Players left to pursue hockey opportunities in places such as Grand Rapids and Duluth, taking with them much of the Raiders' success, said St. Louis Blues scout Mike Antonovich, a 1969 Greenway graduate who led the Raiders to state championships in 1967 and 1968.

“They lost players - to other towns - who thought it was better someplace else,” he added.

Keeping talented players at home wasn't the only issue hampering the program.

Overall participation in the sport had dwindled.
