Don Ross' hat trick in 1959 state championship gave Roseau second straight title, capped 31-0 season

When Don Ross was a kid growing up in Roseau in the 1950s, indoor ice was a luxury item, a wonderment akin to the coming arrival of color televisions.

Back then Ross and his buddies didn’t concern themselves much with new technologies. They were singularly focused on playing hockey.

Hockey, hockey, hockey.

“We started on rivers, we started on frozen fields, we started on ditches, we started everywhere we could find ice,” Ross said. “This was before all the distractions, the snowmobiles and the televisions and all that stuff.”

Two of Ross’ best friends were the Stordahl brothers, Jim and Larry. For three straight years in the late 1950s, the threesome took their finely honed game from Roseau’s frozen rivers and ditches all the way to the state tournament in St. Paul.

Their forward line, with Ross playing right wing, ranks among the state's all-time great units.

"We felt like we could hold our own with anybody," Ross said.

With Ross, Jim Stordahl and Larry Stordahl leading the way, Roseau won back-to-back state championships in 1958 and ’59.

The 1959 team capped a perfect 31-0 season with a 4-2 triumph over Minneapolis Washburn in the title game. Ross, a junior, scored three goals to pace Roseau.

“Donny scored one of his goals on a slap shot from almost the red line,” Larry Stordahl said. “I remember the crack of the puck on his stick and the sound when the puck hit the metal in the back of the net was almost instantaneous. The shot was that hard.

“The goaltender never moved.”

Ross and the Stordahls were named to the all-tournament team, the grand conclusion to one of the most dominant seasons in state high school hockey history. Larry Stordahl said Roseau outscored its opponents by an average of 7 to .07.

Ross, who played sparingly in the 1957 state tournament as a freshman, missed a fourth state tournament appearance as a senior in 1960 when Warroad upended the Rams 1-0 in the regional playoffs.

“That loss I remember,” Ross said. “We outshot them something like 36-12.”

While the Stordahls went on to stardom at the University of Minnesota, Ross headed west to the University of North Dakota. He was shifted from forward to defense in college, where he was twice named an All American. He led the Fighting Sioux to the 1963 NCAA Division I title.

Ross played on the 1964 and ’68 U.S. Olympic teams. He said he received invitations to attend NHL tryout camps with the Boston Bruins and, later, the Montreal Canadiens but preferred to play amateur hockey.

“The money was just a fraction of what it is now,” Ross said about the NHL. “There were no signing bonuses. They were chewing up hockey players left and right.”

Ross’ love for the amateur game hasn’t waned. At 68 he remains something of a skating and shooting phenomenon. Playing on a 60-and-over team filled mostly with Roseau natives, including Larry Stordahl, Ross has won three straight USA Hockey national titles as a key cog on the Byfuglien Trucking squad.

“We’ve had a group that has hung together for 35 years,” Ross said about the team that features 10 Roseau High graduates. “The camaraderie is what makes it so much fun.”
