More than a big, strong, will-imposing physical force, David Backes is a leader. One of those guys who wears the “C” as naturally as a leopard displays its spots.
“He is all of what you look for in a high school hockey player,” Spring Lake Park coach Tom Benson said. “He was committed to a small program like ours, both as a hockey player and a baseball player.
“He was loyal to his school, very proud.”
Character, loyalty, commitment – even opposing coaches tick off those attributes first when talking about one of the state’s most dominant players during the early 2000s.

“He was a big, strong guy all along,” former Centennial coach Erik Aus said. “What he did is a great testament to a young man staying in high school. He went down to play in (Lincoln, Neb., in the United States Hockey League) before his senior year. But he came back to play for Spring Lake Park that season.
“He stayed in high school, and things have worked out pretty well for him.”
There can be no second-guessing Backes’ career decisions. The former Minnesota State star has gone on to become one of the NHL’s most coveted power forwards. Last November, the 6-foot-3, 216-pound Backes signed a five-year deal with the St. Louis Blues reportedly worth $22.5 million.
“I think there’s a lot of emphasis from parents and kids thinking they have to go play junior at such an early age, whether it’s in Canada or even the USHL,” Backes said in February in a Wild.com Q & A. “To me, there are some things that are missed as far as social development. Having your parents around until you’re 17 or 18 years old and that mentorship they provide at those ages – I think it’s really crucial to the development of character. And if you miss that, really if you don’t make it in the hockey world, it’s tough to have all your priorities and morals in line.”
Backes was a cornerstone player for Spring Lake Park starting his sophomore year. As a junior in 2000-01, he scored 29 goals and added 46 assists. His 75 points ranked eighth in the state. He racked up 67 points (31 goals, 36 assists) as a senior.

In 2002, Backes was one of nine finalists up for the Mr. Hockey award given annually to the state’s best senior. He remains the only Spring Lake Park player ever nominated for the award.
The highlight of the 2002 season for Backes and Spring Lake Park came in the quarterfinals of the Section 5A playoffs. The Panthers stunned defending state Class 1A champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s 2-1 at Parade Arena. Backes scored the winning goal on a shot Benilde-St. Margaret’s coach Ken Pauly still marvels over as he recounts it.
“It was like a BB, right into the upper corner,” Pauly said. “It knocked the water bottle off the top of the net. It wouldn’t have mattered who the goaltender was, (former Philadelphia Flyers star) Bernie Parent couldn’t have saved that one.”
Spring Lake Park lost to eventual section champion Totino-Grace 3-0 in the semifinals to end Backes’ career. But that upset victory over the Red Knights remains a flashpoint in the program’s history.
“That’s where David shined, coming up big in a big game,” Benson said. “It was a huge win.”
Backes finished his career with 77 goals and 102 assists for 179 points. The No. 5 he wore for the Panthers was retired in a ceremony Backes attended at Fogarty Arena in Blaine on Nov. 29, 2007. His is the only jersey Spring Lake Pake has retired.
“He could be a one man wrecking crew, there is no doubt about that,” Aus said. “He didn’t have a bad supporting cast around him, but the sign of a great player is that he elevates the players around him. He certainly did that.”
