Forward-turned-defenseman Buzz Schneider was Iron Range star with Babbitt's fledgling program

It was the mid-1960s, and the hockey factories on the Iron Range and north to International Falls were running at full capacity.

By 1966, Eveleth and International Falls each had won five state high school championships. Greenway and Grand Rapids were on the verge of their dynasty years, when they would combine for four more state titles.

Virginia also was regularly churning out Division I college stars.

Then along came Babbitt. The tiny community on the eastern edge of the hockey-crazed Range joined the party. Ron Castellano, a former star player on Eveleth’s championship teams from 1949-51, started Babbitt's program in 1959.

The initial response was underwhelming.

“There was only an outside rink in Babbitt at the time, and I think one person signed up,” said Bill “Buzz” Schneider.

Schneider grew up 90 miles to the west in Coleraine and was in the seventh grade when he moved with his family to Babbitt in 1967.

Ice time was plentiful, as a sparkling new arena was built soon after Schneider’s arrival.

There were advantages of playing for a fledgling program.

“I don’t think anybody ever got cut,” Schneider said.

Tryouts, had there been such a thing, never would have been an issue for Schneider. He was a football standout who played quarterback, defensive back and handled the kicking duties. As a third baseman, he drew serious interest from both the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates.

As for hockey, well … “He was Babbitt’s team, let’s put it that way,” said Pete LoPresti, a former standout Eveleth goaltender who played against Schneider in high school. “I don’t know if he ever left the ice. He was the Iron Lung.”

LoPresti isn’t exaggerating about Schneider’s playing time. Schneider was a forward throughout his youth career and for his first three seasons as a varsity player, but Castellano decided to move his superstar back to defense during Schneider’s senior season in 1971-72.

“I put him on defense, and he still led the team in scoring,” Castellano said. “He didn’t come off the ice very often. He was a major factor on the Iron Range, I’ll tell you that.

“He was a hard worker, even after games sometimes he would go to the outside rink and skate some more.”

Babbitt didn’t have the depth or talent to routinely challenge the top teams in the IRC, much less contend for a berth in the state tournament.

“They were playing in a tough, tough conference, so it wasn’t like they were winning a lot of the games,” LoPresti said. “If you look back at the points they did score, Schneider had his nose in probably 90 percent of them.”

With Schneider rarely leaving the ice, Babbitt was not a team to take lightly.

“I remember my senior year International Falls beat us 3-2, and they went on to win the state tournament,” Schneider said.

Schneider earned the nickname the “Babbitt Rabbit” from longtime Star Tribune hockey writer John Gilbert for his leg-pumping skating style.

“Watching Schneider, it was like a camera was shooting the whole game at a certain speed but it had the ability to speed up when it was on him,” Gilbert said. “He had a long stride but took more strides than anybody. He could get from A to B in record speed.”

Schneider was coveted by several Division I colleges, including North Dakota and Minnesota-Duluth. Legendary Denver coach Murray Armstrong even came to scout Schneider.

“I remember when he flew in to watch Buzz,” Castellano said. “I don’t think he came to Minnesota too often back in those days.”

Schneider eventually chose Minnesota, where a young coach by the name of Herb Brooks had just taken over the program.

Schneider was on the Minnesota team that won the 1974 national championship. He played on the 1976 U.S. Olympic team and was chosen by Brooks yet again to play on the 1980 Olympic squad. Schneider scored five goals and added three assists in seven games as the U.S. won the gold medal. One of those goals came during the U.S. team’s “Miracle” upset of the mighty Soviet Union.

“He was just one of those kids who was at the right place at the right time and never seemed to make too many mistakes,” said LoPresti, who played with Schneider on U.S. team in the 1976 World Championships. “When he was on the ice you always felt better.”
