Brimming with horsepower, Eric Strobel wasn’t a hockey player as much as he was a dragster.
Strobel could go from zero to top speed in a blink of an eye -- so fast he should have been equipped with a parachute instead of shoulder pads.
He was a rocketship on ice.
“Eric just had the thighs,” said Todd Lecy, a former Rochester John Marshall standout who along with his brother Scott grew up playing with and against Rochester Mayo’s Strobel. “Huge strength. He would take those first few strides, and he was off.”
The son of former NHL player Art Strobel, Eric was a natural born rink rat. Rochester Mayo coach Lorne Grosso remembers first taking notice of a pint-sized Strobel not so much because of his hockey ability but more so because the kid never seemed to leave the rink.
“I would go past the rink and see him out there, and then five hours later go past again and notice he was still there,” Grosso said. “He was always a smooth skater. He spent so much time on the ice. You know how somebody gets good, it is the repetition.”
Specialized hockey training was not in vogue when Strobel was growing up in Rochester in the 1960s and ’70s. Strobel did not attend power skating schools or perform hockey-specific workouts in the offseason.
He just played.
Strobel was a fixture at Rochester’s outdoor rinks and in his backyard, where Strobel’s father (who played seven games for the New York Rangers during the 1943-44 season) and a handyman neighbor built a 100-by-50 foot rink complete with custom-built boards.
“My dad had a hockey background,” Strobel said about his father, who finished his pro career playing for the Rochester Mustangs in the United States Hockey League. “I guess I just kind of migrated into it when I was a kid.
“We had a lot of fun.”
While Grosso certainly had an appreciation for his star player’s cashmere-smooth skating and wickedly accurate shooting, what the longtime Mayo coach really liked about Strobel was his demeanor.
“He had such a great, positive attitude about hockey,” Grosso said. “He was just a nonchalant kid. He was always a very humble kid.”
Strobel was a high school standout the instant he joined the Spartans’ varsity as a sophomore. He was a first-team Associated Press all-state selection as a junior and senior at Mayo in 1974-75 and 1975-76, when he ranked among the state’s scoring leaders.
A three-sport athlete, Strobel was an outside linebacker/running back in football and outfielder in baseball. He reached the state baseball tournament with the Spartans, but had no expectation of doing the same in hockey.
John Marshall ended up with the bulk of the town’s hockey talent in the 1970s, and Mayo never advanced past the Section 1 quarterfinals during Strobel’s three seasons.
“You have to be realistic,” Strobel said. “Our team just wasn’t good enough. We didn’t have the depth.”
Talent-deprived Mayo still attracted college recruiters by the busload. Denver, Michigan Tech, Wisconsin and Minnesota all were jockeying to land Strobel, who said he was leaning toward Michigan Tech before finally signing to play for Herb Brooks and the University of Minnesota.
Strobel was part of the Gophers’ 1979 national championship team and was chosen by Brooks to play for the U.S. in the 1980 Olympics. Strobel was considered the fastest skater on the 1980 “Miracle” team that beat the mighty Soviet Union en route to winning the gold medal in Lake Placid, N.Y.
“He is a legend in this town,” said Lecy, who still lives in Rochester.
Strobel, who has two adult daughters, lives in Apple Valley, where he has coached Pee Wee hockey in the Eastview Youth Hockey Association. He is part owner of a golf course in the Brainerd area and co-owner of a Rochester acoustical contracting business.
