Hornets junior forward is grandson of local hockey legend Lou Nanne

A familiar name in the Minnesota hockey community is staying close to home.

Edina junior forward Louie Nanne has given a verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota, his father Marty Nanne confirmed Tuesday.

Louie had been considering a move out east after high school, but one recent visit to Minnesota’s campus, facilities and Carlson School of Management is all it took to change his mind.

“He felt it was a great opportunity here with the tradition and the legacy,” Marty Nanne said.

Louie is the grandson of Lou Nanne, a former Gophers player and player, coach and GM with the North Stars. Marty Nanne also played for the Gophers before a brief professional career in the International Hockey League.

Louie’s decision to skate for Minnesota like his family members comes with quite a bit of pressure. And Dad says Louie is ready.

“We made sure the decision was his, and we wanted him to go see as many schools as possible,” Marty Nanne said. “But after he [visited Minnesota] he said he didn’t need to see any others. My dad is very happy, and he told him it doesn’t matter where he goes; with the Nanne name there will be pressure wherever he is. It might as well be at home, and [Louie] will experience good things and bad things that go with the name. Hopefully the good outweigh the bad.”

Louie Nanne (5-11, 165 pounds) scored 13 goals and 16 assists in 27 games last year for the Hornets. He will return for his junior year later this fall before exploring his options going forward.

“Depending on how this year goes and how he develops and grows, we’ll see if anything happens,” Marty Nanne said. “We’ll listen to the U of M as well as if any [NHL] team drafts him for input on whether he should go to juniors or stay in high school.”
