Stealing the puck from Ryan McDonagh wasn’t so much an accomplishment as it was a death sentence.
“He had a lot of fun,” Cretin-Derham Hall coach Jim O’Neill said about McDonagh, “but once you took the puck away from him, it wasn’t fun anymore.”
No, the puck belonged to McDonagh. At least that’s the way he figured it. The front of the Raiders’ net was McDonagh's, too.
McDonagh, a defenseman, also was ferocious in the offensive end. There weren’t a lot of safe zones when he was on the ice. He covered too much territory, too quickly.
“He’s a tough kid,” O’Neil said about the 6-foot-1, 210-pound McDonagh. “We never had anyone who could flat out skate forwards, backwards and laterally like him.
“I think that is what is going to keep him in the NHL for a long time, just his skating ability.”

Cretin-Derham Hall won its only Minnesota State High School League championship in 2006, McDonagh’s junior season. The Raiders had made just one previous state tournament appearance, in 1998. Back in the 1950s and ’60s, before the merger of Cretin and Derham Hall, private schools had their own state hockey tournament.
Cretin had been a hockey power in the Twin Cities, but more recently was known for its prowess in baseball and football.
The Raiders’ return to hockey prominence had been decades in the making.
“It was just unbelievable,” McDonagh, who plays for the New York Rangers, said about reaching the state tournament. “I was pretty nervous before the tournament, having grown up watching it.
“But everybody was pretty confident. We just new if we played right and didn’t make any mistakes we were probably going to come out on top.”
McDonagh registered an assist as Cretin-Derham Hall beat Eagan 5-2 in the quarterfinals. The Raiders outshot the Wildcats 28-19.
McDonagh again had an assist in the semifinals, as Cretin-Derham Hall beat Blaine 4-2. The Raiders had the territorial advantage, outshooting the Bengals 27-18.
McDonagh scored twice and added an assist in the championship game, when Cretin-Derham Hall scored five goals in the third period to beat Grand Rapids 7-0. This time the Raiders almost scored more goals than Grand Rapids had shots.
“We won that tournament on defense,” said O’Neill, whose Raiders outshot the Thunderhawks 25-8 in the title game. “McDonagh was the head man there. He led the way, definitely.”
McDonagh was one of four Cretin-Derham Hall players named to the all-tournament team.
“It all happened all pretty quick,” McDonagh said about winning the championship. “There was no scoring in the second period. We thought we were getting good chances. We needed to try to put them away.
“When we starting scoring all those goals I remember guys were just getting so excited and saying, ‘Holy cow, we are really going to do this.’ It was just a tremendous memory.”

As a senior, McDonagh won a state baseball title but the Raiders were unable to duplicate the previous year’s hockey magic. Cretin-Derham Hall suffered an agonizing overtime loss to Woodbury in the Section 2AA championship game.
McDonagh finished his senior season with 14 goals and 26 assists and won the Mr. Hockey award given to the state’s top senior skater.
Also a talented football player, McDonagh was something of a throwback. In an era when more and more players specialize in a chosen sport at an early age, McDonagh’s focus was on whatever was in season.
“I played hockey in the wintertime,” he said. “In the spring I played baseball. In the summer I did a little bit of everything.”
McDonagh, whose uncle is former NFL quarterback Steve Walsh, was a workout fiend the summer before his sophomore year in school. He was intent on making the Raiders’ high-powered varsity football program.
“The whole summer I was going to the weight room at the school, getting stronger so I could play with the big varsity team,” said McDonagh, who made the varsity squad and played as a defensive back and linebacker. “I think that’s kind of where I got my mobility and agility.”
McDonagh, who was drafted 12th overall by the Montreal Canadians in 2007 and had his rights traded to the Rangers in 2009, played three seasons at the University of Wisconsin, reaching the national title game with the Badgers as a junior in 2010.
McDonagh played 40 games for the Rangers last season, scoring a goal and adding eight assists.
