Pro scouts were huddled en masse in a warming room overlooking the ice sheet at Osseo’s notoriously frigid Dick Vraa Ice Arena.
The event was nothing more than a preseason scrimmage, but Trent Klatt was the sort of player who could attract major league scrutiny simply by lacing his skates.
One of those kids who was always a head taller and stride or two faster, Klatt was Squirt-aged but already starring one level up as a Pee Wee in the Brooklyn Park youth hockey system.
The bigger, faster, stronger theme never played itself out. Season after season, Klatt just kept getting better and better and better.
“Trent was like a man amongs boys,” said Ray Dahlof, Klatt’s high school coach at Osseo. “He never disappointed at any level, going all the way through his high school career.”

Enhancing Klatt’s abundance of natural talent was his interest in other sports.
“I played baseball, I played soccer, I played football, I played golf,” Klatt said. “I played a whole bunch of sports. I was an athlete first and hockey player second, so I didn’t get burned out.”
Klatt was as driven as he was naturally gifted. All those years of hype – not to mention the mountains upon mountains of goals – did nothing to diminish his desire to excel.
“He was one of those kids who was really fun to coach,” Dahlof said. “When we did drills he was always the first one in line. He was all business when we were out there in practice.
“He was really down to earth. He wasn’t a prima donna.”
Klatt scored nine goals and added 27 assists as a sophomore playing his first varsity season.
As a junior he racked up 19 goals and added 17 assists, helping Osseo advance to the Section 3 championship game against Hill-Murray at the Met Sports Center in Bloomington.
“Probably his biggest asset was his incredible passing ability,” Dahlof said. “He could see the ice and thread passes to his teammates like no one I have ever seen. He was also a phenomenal stickhandler. Everything was real smooth with Trent.”
Klatt had grown up playing on state title-contending teams all through youth hockey. Problem was, school district and youth hockey boundary lines in his Brooklyn Park neighborhood didn’t match. While Klatt headed off to high school in Osseo, many of his lifelong friends and teammates played instead for Park Center.
Osseo beat Park Center 7-1 in the Section 3 semifinals in 1988 to earn that championship showdown with Hill-Murray.
“At that point in time it is every kid’s dream to play in the state tournament,” said Klatt, who played in 782 NHL games spanning 14 seasons and retired from pro hockey in 2004. “As I’ve traveled around and watched hockey in different parts of the world, I have really, really come to appreciate the high school level of hockey in the Minnesota. You won’t see anything like it anywhere else in the word.
“I never got the opportunity to play in something I along with every other kid in the state dreamed of.”

One of the few disappointments in Klatt’s high school career was Osseo’s 5-1 loss to the Pioneers.
“That’s probably the most memorable game for me because we were that close to getting (to the state tournament),” Klatt said.
As a senior, Klatt scored 24 goals and added 39 assists in 22 games on his way to being named Mr. Hockey. The Orioles’ were ousted from the playoffs by, of all teams, Park Center 3-0 in the section quarterfinals.
Klatt’s 135 career points ranks fourth in Osseo history.
“Every time he touched the puck there was a scoring opportunity,” said Garrett Strot, who was an Orioles assistant coach when Klatt was a senior. “I remember against Anoka in the first game of the season, when Trent got the puck there was a chance of us scoring. He was that dominant.”
Klatt, who also played quarterback on the Osseo football team and pitched and caught on the Orioles’ baseball team, played three seasons of hockey at the University of Minnesota. As happened throughout his career, Klatt’s impact grew each season. He scored 36 points as a freshman, 44 as a sophomore and 78 as a junior before turning pro the following season.
Klatt, who works as a scout and in player development for the New York Islanders, lives in Grand Rapids where he has served as a youth hockey coach.
