Mark Parrish wasn’t one of those kids who enjoyed skating simply for the sake of skating. He wasn’t much interested in crossovers, figure eights and shoot the ducks.
Nah, if Parrish was stepping on the ice he was bringing his stick. And there had better be pucks and a net. Especially a net.
When Parrish hit the rink he made a beeline for his favorite spot. And that’s where he stayed.
“My dad says when I was a kid I didn’t like to skate much,” Parrish said. “I just liked to stand in front of the net and shoot the puck and watch it go in.
“I just always loved scoring goals. I don’t really know why.”
All the great teams have the same checklist of components: A steady if not stellar goaltender, a mix of stay-at-home and puck-rushing defensemen and a forward lineup balanced with playmakers, grinders and goal scorers.
In the mid-1990s, Bloomington Jefferson had one of the greatest assemblies of talent in state high school hockey history. The Jaguars lost just twice en route to the 1992 Tier I title, went unbeaten in winning a second straight title in 1993 and made it three straight championships with a one-loss season in 1994.
There was no better program than Jefferson.
There was no better Jaguars goal scorer than Parrish.

“He really was unreal for a high school kid,” said Brian Urick, Minnetonka's coach and a former Skippers star who played against Parrish in high school. “From catching it and then getting it off his stick, his shot was beyond anything any kid had at the high school level.
“Those guys would get him the puck and boom, it was in the back of the net.”
As a sophomore, Parrish played junior varsity for much of the season before being moved to the varsity as a fill-in for a banged up Nick Checco. Parrish, playing his role to perfection, made an instant, goal-scoring impact before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
During the 1993-94 season Parrish was a winger on a line centered by Joe Bianchi. The goals -- and victories -- came in bunches as Jefferson cruised through the regular season and won its three Section 5 playoff games by a combined score of 24-3. Included in that playoff blitzkrieg was a 10-1 section final thumping of Burnsville.
Victories at the state tournament did not come as easily. The Jaguars eked past Osseo 1-0 and Duluth East 2-1 to earn a championship showdown with Moorhead, which had scored a combined 11 goals in its two victories.
The high-flying Spuds seemed poised to end the Jaguars' dynasty. A packed St. Paul Civic Center was electric with anticipation.
“The only way I can ever think of describing it is comparing it to football in Texas,” Parrish said about Minnesota’s white-hot passion for high school hockey. “It is fantastic. A lot of the guys who aren’t from Minnesota don’t have that kind of experience and can’t relate when you tell them about it.”
The Jaguars trailed Moorhead 1-0 after the opening period. A second-period goal by Parrish tied the score at 1 heading into the third. The Jaguars scored twice in the final period to earn the 3-1 triumph.
“One thing I learned about in high school was taking pride in tradition and taking pride in being part of something special,” Parrish said. “You just felt pride in wearing the jersey.”
The graduation of Bianchi and star defenseman Mike Crowley after the 1993-94 season left the Jaguars’ fortunes squarely in the hands of Parrish and fellow senior forward Mike Anderson.

Parrish again played his goal-scorer’s role to perfection, scoring 40 times in 27 games while playing one of the state’s toughest schedules. Parrish’s output that season ranks second in Jefferson history only to Chris Tucker’s 41 goals in 1988-89. Parrish’s 80 career goals is second in Jaguars history behind Joe Bianchi’s 85.
“The knock people had about Mark was his skating,” said John Bianchi, a former longtime assistant coach for the Jaguars. “Everyone said he wasn’t a great skater. He was one of those guys who wasn’t very stylish in the way he skated, so people didn’t think he was getting from Point A to Point B.
“I always wondered why (scouts) were so worried about that. He was scoring close to 40 goals every year playing one of the toughest schedules in the state. How the heck was he doing that?”
At the 1995 state tournament, Parrish and the Jaguars squared off against another of the state’s great all-time goal scorers in Duluth East’s Dave Spehar. The Greyhounds beat Jefferson 5-0 behind a Spehar hat trick.
Jefferson beat Champlin Park 8-3 and White Bear Lake 7-2 en route to the consolation championship.
Parrish has continued to score goals at every level. He scored 42 goals in two seasons at St. Cloud State, racked up a whopping 54 goals in 54 games playing major junior hockey for the Seattle Thunderbirds and introduced himself to the NHL with a 24-goal rookie season with the Florida Panthers in 1998-99.
Parrish, entering his 13th NHL season, has 216 goals in 722 games. He scored 35 goals from 2006-08 with the Minnesota Wild and is hoping to earn a roster spot this fall with the Ottawa Senators.
He lives in Plymouth in the offseason.
