Team Wisconsin scored three unanswered goals in the third period as it rallied to forge a 5-5 tie with Team North in an Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League matchup on Sunday, Oct. 9, at New Hope Ice Arena in New Hope.
Brett Bukowski of Superior, Jason Ford of Waunakee and Alec Vanko of Oregon scored the third-period goals for Team Wisconsin (5-7-3). Vanko’s goal, a quick wrist shot from the point, came with 6 minutes, 44 seconds remaining and closed the scoring.
Jesse Tredinnick of Onalaska scored twice and Kyle Lee of Wausau West added three assists for Team Wisconsin.
Karson Kuhlman of Cloquet and Jared Thomas of Hermantown each had a goal and an assist for Team North (6-6-3), which led 2-0 after the first and 5-2 heading into the third.
Jake Bischoff of Grand Rapids, Matt Pohlkamp of Brainerd and Trevor Olson of Duluth East also scored for Team North. Olson’s goal was his team-leading 11th of the season.
Anders Frank of Elk River made 31 saves for Team North. Chris Nell of Green Bay Notre Dame Academy made 39 saves, including 17 in the final period.
1. Kyle Lee, Team Wisconsin
The Wausau West senior wasn’t involved in every Team Wisconsin goal, but it sure seemed like it. The speedy, hard-working Lee assisted on two of Team Wisconsin’s three third-period goals and finished with three assists. Lee leads Team Wisiconsin with 18 points.
2. Alec Vanko, Team Wisconsin
The senior defenseman from Oregon showcased his quick release and deadly aim in the late stages of the third period when he drifted through the high slot, caught a pass and released a low shot all in one motion. Vanko’s goal tied the score at 5.
3. Jake Randolph, Team North
A Duluth East senior who had missed much of the Elite League season with a concussion, Randolph said he felt rusty but looked to be in top playmaking form as he assisted on two second-period goals.
