Bobby Krieger didn’t skate like most kids.

Williard Ikola, who won eight state championships in 33 years of coaching at Edina, never could figure out the mechanics of what Krieger was doing differently.

“I swore that he skated on the inside of his boots,” Ikola said. “I’m sure that was always the part of the skate he wore out first.

“You close your eyes and listen to that kid skate, it was just a different sound than other players.

“God he could go.”

Any discussion about the fastest player in state high school history requires the inclusion of Krieger, who starred in three straight state tournaments for the Hornets from 1968-70.

Defensemen unaware of Krieger’s lightning bolt strikes were ridiculously overmatched. Even those fully versed in Krieger’s bust-the-sound-barrier capabilities were unable to contain him.

“One of the funniest things I ever saw happened when we were playing up in Duluth against Duluth East,” Ikola said. “Krieger had the puck at the top of the circles in our zone. He came out and with it, and the two Duluth East defensemen at the blue line turned their back on him and skated to mid-ice, then turned around to pick him up.

“But by then he was already by them. The eyes of the Duluth East kids were just unbelievable. They were looking around like, ‘Where the hell did he go?’ ”

Krieger, who also possessed quick hands and an accurate shot, scored in all manner of ways for the Hornets. Breakaways, however, were his specialty.

In the 1970 state championship game, Edina and Minneapolis Southwest were locked in a scoreless tie with time running out in the third period when Krieger broke in alone on Southwest goaltender Brad Shelstad.

The scenario couldn’t have been plotted more perfectly for the Hornets. Earlier in the tournament, Krieger scored in double overtime to lift Edina past Warroad 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Krieger assisted on linemate Bruce Carlson’s overtime goal against St. Paul Johnson in a 2-1 semifinal triumph.

Now it was the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Krieger once again cradling the Hornets’ destiny on the blade of his stick.

“I remember knowing how much time was left and having to hurry,” Krieger said. “I think I got a little excited when I got in next to the goal and didn’t carry out my normal routine. I hurried a little and didn’t raise the puck high enough. And Brad made a great save of course.”

Carlson corralled the rebound and missed the net by inches just as the third period expired. Minneapolis Southwest scored in overtime to win its only state title.

“That was our third overtime game,” said Krieger, the son of former Dartmouth football standout Bob Krieger Sr., who also played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles. “It was very fatiguing. You are not supposed to get tired when you are that young, I guess. But I remember everyone feeling the fatigue.”

As a sophomore in 1968, Krieger scored both goals as Edina suffered a 6-2 state quarterfinal pounding against South St. Paul. The Hornets were bounced from the tournament with another 6-2 loss, this time at the hands of Roseau.

Edina also had gone two-and-out the previous year, mustering just two goals in its two losses.

“In 1968 we had very good team,” Krieger said. “After we lost in the state tournament we had a team meeting. Willard Ikola gave an impassioned speech about ’69 being our year and time for us to break through and get it done.

“It was kind of a galvanizing moment.”

Edina beat Mounds View 5-0 and South St. Paul 7-1 to reach the championship game of the 1969 state tournament. In one of the most famous games in state history, the Hornets beat Warroad 5-4 in overtime at a packed Met Sports Center in Bloomington for the school’s first championship.

Krieger, who had two goals and two assists in the 1969 state tournament, honed his skills during the summers by attending hockey schools run by legendary former Dartmouth coach Eddie Jeremiah.

“I had good instruction when I was young,” said Krieger, who grew up idolizing star high school players such as Peter Fichuk and Tim Sheehy of International Falls. “Back then not too many kids skated in the summer. We didn’t really have power skating lessons like they do now, but there were tips on how to skate well.

“I tried not to pick my feet up too high and keep them as low as I could to the surface of the ice.”

Whatever Kreiger was doing, he did it better than any player in the state.

“He was electrifying,” said Mark Fretland, a former Hornets forward who graduated with Krieger. “Bobby was as good as a hockey player as I ever saw. There have been some great skaters, but even to this day I don’t think there has been anybody who could skate as fast as he did.

“He had long strides. Once he got going his jersey would just ripple in the wind. He was just that much quicker than everybody else. In scrimmages you would have to trip him or do something to bring him down just to keep up with him.”

Krieger, who was also a standout golfer in high school, initially was going to play hockey at Dartmouth. But he changed his mind and accepted a scholarship offer from Denver instead. Krieger played for four seasons for the Pioneers and was an all-WCHA selection in 1973-74.

Picked for the U.S. national team in the 1972 and 1974 World Championships, Krieger played four seasons in the minor leagues and retired from professional hockey in 1978.

He lives in Los Angeles where he works as vice president of Graham Insurance Group.
