No. 8 Eagles rally twice in the third period to salvage tie with Elk River

Junior forward Andrew Knudsen scored with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining in the third period as No. 8-ranked Eden Prairie rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit and force overtime in an eventual 3-3 tie with Elk River on Thursday, Dec. 8, in the opening game of the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Arena in Edina.

Knudsen’s goal came just 35 seconds after Andrew Zerban’s goal, his second of the game, put Elk River ahead 3-2. Zerban scored after grabbing the puck in front of the Eden Prairie goal and, despite being in heavy traffic, calmly waiting to wrap the puck around sprawling Eagles goaltender Jack Gerdes.

Luc Snuggerud and Danny Halloran also scored in the third period for the Eagles (3-0-1) as they tied the score at 2 with 5:18 remaiining.

Garrett Aldrich and Zerban scored in the opening period to give the Elks (4-1-1) a 2-0 lead. Zerban’s goal came on a shorthanded breakaway.

Gerdes finished with 26 saves for the Eagles. Elk River’s Anders Franke made 31 saves.
