Two north metro goaltenders withstood a barrage of shots on Saturday to keep their underdog teams in the games.

Champlin Park's Tyler Nelson stopped all 17 Blaine shots in the first period to set the tone in a 5-4 victory. Nelson finished with 43 saves.

Busier yet was Andover's Chase Perry, who made 60 saves in a 2-2 tie against Maple Grove, one of Minnesota's elite teams. Perry had a shutout bid ruined by two Crimson goals in the final two minutes of regulation.

Perry's father, Craig, who played goaltender at North Dakota, missed the game while on an annual ice fishing trip in Canada. He followed the action via text messages.

Mounds View junior Noah Lucas sets meet record

Junior Noah Lucas led Mounds View to an eighth-place finish at the boys' Class 2A True Team swimming and diving meet Jan. 21 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Lucas won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. His mark of 1 minute, 41.50 seconds in the 200 freestyle broke the meet record of 1:42.70 set by Edina's Drew Johnson in 2009.

Lucas topped the field in the 200 freestyle by more than two seconds on the way to the meet record. He was even more dominant in the 500 freestyle. His season's best time of 4:38.21 was nearly seven seconds faster than his closest rival's time and two seconds off the meet record.

He now holds the state's fastest times in both events.
