All 16 sections have now filled out their brackets as the Road to the X begins in earnest

As has been the case for the past few years, Section 1AA could again go through Lakeville. Lakeville South earned the No. 1 seed in the bracket ahead of crosstown rival Lakeville North, but the Panthers have beaten South to get to state in each of the last two years. Rochester Century, the champions of the Big 9 Conference, earned the No. 3 seed.

With the release of the bracket, the entire field sectional playoff field has now been set. A handful of first-round games began Saturday night, but the vast majority of play gets underway Tuesday, Feb. 21 around the state.

The annual showdown in Section 4AA between Hill-Murray and White Bear Lake could again be on tap as the two schools picked up the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, in the seeding released Sunday afternoon. No. 3 Roseville, No. 4 Mounds View, No. 5 Stillwater Area and other Suburban East Conference and Classic Suburban Conference teams could put a dent in that plan, however.

The defending state Class A champion, St. Thomas Academy, received the top seed in Section 4A. The Cadets will kick off their bid to repeat as state champions with a quarterfinal match-up against the winner of the No. 8 Spring Lake Park/No. 9 Henry Sibley first-round game. The Cadets will face a tough field that also includes No. 2 Totino-Grace, No. 3 Mahtomedi and No. 4 South St. Paul.

The gauntlet has been set. The Section 6AA seedings have been released Sunday morning, setting up what is arguably the toughest path to the state tournament. Minnetonka earned the No. 1 seed, followed by Eden Prairie, Benilde-St. Margaret's and Wayzata. Three of the top four seeds play in the Lake Conference, where they meet twice a winter in the regular season.

Thursday's Seeding Results

Unbeaten and top-ranked Hermantown earned the No. 1 seed in the Section 5A playoffs in the bracket released Thursday morning. It was an expected honor for the Hawks, who have one regular season game remaining before starting playoffs.

Rogers grabbed the No. 2 seed over St. Cloud Cathedral, the Royals' prospects buoyed after beating the Crusaders head-to-head Tuesday night in Rogers. All three await their quarterfinal opponent, which will be decided in first-round games Tuesday night, Feb. 21.

Wednesday's Seeding Results

Top-ranked Duluth East earned the top seed in Section 7AA on Wednesday, and the three-way race for the section's No. 2 seed went to Andover.

Andover, Elk River and Grand Rapids all could have made a convincing argument for section's second seed. The Huskies, who beat Elk River twice during the regular season, earned the right to avoid the high-powered Greyhounds until a potential section championship showdown.

Of course, if the seeds hold, Andover would first have to get past Grand Rapids, which climbed as high No. 6 in the state rankings just before the holiday tournament season.

New Ulm, the two-time defending champion in Section 3A, earned the No. 1 seed in the section for the upcoming playoffs as the first wave of the state's 16 brackets were released on Wednesday.

Little Falls, which was stunned by St. Cloud Apollo in the Section 6A quarterfinals in one of the biggest playoff upsets in state history last season, again earned the No. 1 seed in Section 6A as several of the state's 16 playoff brackets were set on Wednesday.
