Crucial third-period penalty kill allows Eagles to make third straight state tourney trip

New Ulm sophomore Judd Davis scored the winning goal with 6 minutes, 28 seconds left in the second period, and the top-seeded Eagles killed a 5-minute major penalty in the third as they earned their third straight trip to the state Class 1A tournament by beating No. 3 seed Luverne 2-1 in the Section 3A championship game on Friday, March 2, at Don Roberts Arena on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter.

Brody Peterson’s power-play goal in the first period gave New Ulm (17-11-0) the early lead.

Luverne (21-5-2) tied it at 1 on a goal by Cody Christensen midway through the second period.

New Ulm’s Brach Kraus stopped 12 of 13 shots to earn the victory. Luverne goaltender Kendall Meyer made 19 saves.

Statistics, Summary

The Eagles forward had a hand in both goals, highlighted by his stellar centering feed to Judd Davis to break a 1-1 tie. Schreckenberg was active throughout, causing havoc in the offensive zone.

Peterson opened the scoring for New Ulm, breaking a scoreless tie with a nifty goal in the first. He consistently was a factor on offense, totaling five shots.

Kraus was a pleasure to watch, turning back every shot except one. He ramped up his effort in the third, diving and sprawling to make two game-saving stops.
