New Ulm sophomore Judd Davis scored the winning goal with 6 minutes, 28 seconds left in the second period, and the top-seeded Eagles killed a 5-minute major penalty in the third as they earned their third straight trip to the state Class 1A tournament by beating No. 3 seed Luverne 2-1 in the Section 3A championship game on Friday, March 2, at Don Roberts Arena on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter.
Brody Peterson’s power-play goal in the first period gave New Ulm (17-11-0) the early lead.
Luverne (21-5-2) tied it at 1 on a goal by Cody Christensen midway through the second period.
New Ulm’s Brach Kraus stopped 12 of 13 shots to earn the victory. Luverne goaltender Kendall Meyer made 19 saves.
