No. 1-ranked Duluth East (27-1-0) earned the top seed for the state Class 2A tournament and will play unranked Lakeville South (20-8-0) in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, March 8, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Duluth East lost to Eden Prairie in triple overtime in last year's state championship game.

The top four seeds were set by a vote of the eight coaches with teams in the state tournament. The order of the bottom four teams, and the corresponding Thursday quarterfinal matchups, was determined by the Minnesota State High School League through a random draw.

Seven of the state's top 10 teams in the Hub's final Class 2A rankings reached the state tournament. No. 2 Minnetonka, No. 7 Eden Prairie and No. 8 Wayzata all were in the same section (6AA) as No. 6 ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's (22-6-0).

No. 4 ranked Edina (23-5-0) received the No. 4 seed and will play unseeded Benilde-St. Margaret's on Thursday at 8 p.m.

No. 3-ranked Maple Grove (24-2-2) is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 9-ranked Hill-Murray (22-6-0) at 11 a.m. in the first of the four quarterfinals.

No. 5-ranked Eagan (24-3-1) received the No. 3 seed and plays No.-10 ranked Moorhead (21-6-0) at 1 p.m.

Undefeated Hermantown gets top seed in Class 1A 

Hermantown, the state's lone unbeaten team, received the top seed for the state Class 1A tournament that begins on Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The top-ranked Hawks (28-0-0) have reached the Class 1A championship game each of the past two seasons, losing to Breck and St. Thomas Academy. They open play with a 6 p.m. matchup against No. 8-ranked Rochester Lourdes (20-8-0).

No. 3-ranked Breck (24-3-1), which won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6-ranked Duluth Marshall (21-7-0) at 1 p.m.

No. 4-ranked Thief River Falls (22-4-2) received the No. 4 seed and will play New Ulm (17-11-0) at 8 p.m.
