A weekend of travel has yielded some classic match ups.

 

Brainerd/Pillager/Pierz 3    Crookston 1
 
After a scoreless two periods of back and forth action, Brainerd/Pillager/Pierz scored three goals in the first 7:55 of the third period to seize control of the game and capture the 3-1 win over Crookston. Brett Jenkins, Michael Rinio, and Fussy Mason all scored to propel their club to the win. Crookston was 0-9 on the power play while both goalies were stout in the net.   Matt Grove turned aside 30 saves for Crookston and Reid Mimack notched  32 for BPP. Up next for Crookston is a game with Kittson County Central while BPP will square off with cross-town rival Alexandria.
 
Minnetonka 4   Hibbing 0
 
The Hibbing Blue Jackets invaded Pagel Arena Friday night and were held at bay by the Minnetonka Skippers by a score of 4-0. Tommy Lundquist, Thomas Schutt and Nick Helmer scored first period goals to lead their team. Jake Thornberg scored the final tally in the third period. Tonka outshot the Jackets 30-16 for the game with Jim Kruger posting the shutout. Hibbing will take on the Armstrong Falcons Saturday to round out their road trip to the Twin Cities. Meanwhile, the Skippers will travel 494 to take on Park of Cottage Grove tomorrow.
 
 
Buffalo 4   Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 2
 
The Buffalo Bison defeated the Cloquet Esko Carlton (CEC) Lumberjacks 4-2 last night behind the effort of Josh Gaughan’s 4 point effort with 2 goals and 2 assists. Cole Meyer added 2 assists for the Bison while goalie Eric Sheie stopped 26 stops in the win. Jack McFarlane scored both CEC goals Friday night.  Buffalo improved to 1-2 on the season and the Lumberjacks fell to 1-1-1. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton will face off with South St. Paul in the friendly confines of Wakota Arena Saturday night while the Bison will hook up with St. Michael Albertville in Mississippi 8 Conference play Saturday.
 
Park Rapids 8   Walker Hackensack-Akeley 1
 
Tucker Coborn scored two goals and added an assist as his Park Rapids team smothered Walker Hackensack-Akely 8-1 Friday night. Kevin McMorrow had a goal and three assists in an impressive four point night. He now has six points in two games. Park outshot WHA by a 44-8 margin.  Daniel Nelson scored his second of the season and his team’s only goal at 8:52 of the first period.  Park Rapids (2-0, 1-0) will take on the Green Wave of East Grand Forks Saturday afternoon at 4pm. Walker Hackensack-Akeley will play Northern Lakes Lightning next Tuesday. 
 
 
Stillwater 4    Grand Rapids 3
 
The Stillwater Ponies scored the game’s first four goals and held on to defeat the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks by a score of 4-3 at the St. Croix Rec Center. Nate Hewes scored two goals for the Ponies and Tristans Penella turned aside 29 shots to lead his club. The Thunderhawks outshot the Ponies 32-17 for the game and Sam Rendle registered a point (1g-2a)on all three Thunderhawk goals. John Skrbec scored a pair of third period goals for a frantic finish. The Ponies (1-0) play host to the Benilde St. Margaret’s Red Knights Saturday night. The Thunderhawks (0-1-1) head up the road and take on Forest Lake at 3pm.
