Game recap

East Grand Forks posted its second consecutive shutout to open the season, beating host St. Cloud Cathedral 4-0 at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud Friday night, Nov. 30.

The Green Wave (2-0-0) rode strong special teams play, killing off three five-minute major penalties against the Crusaders (2-1-0) in a matchup of top-10 Class 1A powers.

Tanner Tweten opened the scoring just 1 minute, 39 seconds into the game and it seemed as if the two teams would be off and running. Instead, the game settled into a special teams battle. East Grand Forks was assessed 21 minutes in penalties (and a game misconduct to Eddie Eades), but Cathedral was 0-for-5 with the man advantage against an aggressive Green Wave penalty kill.

The Green Wave also had five power plays, but didn't cash in until Kolton Aubol knocked in a goal midway through the third period. He added another goal just three minutes later. Dixon Bowen capped the scoring with a short-handed, empty-netter with 5.2 seconds left.

Bowen finished with a goal and two assists while Tommy Hajicek had three assists for the Green Wave, who outshot Cathedral 34-24. Tanner Lindstrom posted his second shutout of the young season with 24 saves for EGF, while Josh Robak stopped 30 shots for the Crusaders.

1. Kolton Aubol, East Grand Forks
The first star should honestly go to the entire Green Wave penalty killing unit, which was outstanding all game long against a potent Cathedral offense. But Aubol also cashed on offensively with a pair of third period goals that put the game out of reach.

2. Tanner Lindstrom, East Grand Forks
Not too bad a start to the season for the senior goaltender. Two games. Two shutouts. After seeing only a handful of shots against Park Rapids, Lindstrom was tested much more Friday night against Cathedral, including during three separate five-minute majors. But he proved up to the challenge, stopping all 24 shots.

3. Colton Poolman, East Grand Forks
After his defensive partner was given a game misconduct halfway through the game, Poolman remained calm and steady on the blue line. He was a key penalty killer for the Green Wave and delivered some big hits of his own -- without drawing the referees attention.
