Zephyrs Wohler makes 48 saves to lead his team to a 4-1 win over the Cadets

Maplewood, Mn

The Mahtomedi Zephyrs ended a four year reign of trips to the State Tournament by the St. Thomas Academy Cadets with a stunning 4-1 victory at Aldrich Arena.  Brad Wohlers made 48 saves and Brandon Zurn added a pair of goals to lead their team.  The victory by the Zephyrs insures there will be a new champion at the Class A level.

The Zephyrs benefited from a pair of first period goals as Josh Erickson scored at 4:58 and Zurn notched his first of two at 16:24.  They never looked back as they had an answer for Christian Isackson’s 18th of the season with a goal by Ben Holker at 14:07

The Cadets came in waves as they fired 22 shots on Wohlers as he was near perfect.  The Zephyrs followed his lead, and in the third period Brandon Zurn added the empty net goal to finish the deal and lift the Zephyrs to their first State Tournament appearance since 2001.  Mahtomedi has made five appearances at the State Class 1A tournament.

St. Thomas lost for just the fifth time this season as they closed out with a 21-5-2 record.  The Zephyrs improved to 20-6-2 on the season and are led offensively by Zurn and his 26 and goals along with Charlie Adams, Ben Marshall and Brian Houdek.

Mahtomedi is set to open the tournament Wednesday morning against St. Cloud Cathedral at 11am. The tournament is at Xcel Energy Center.
