Saint Paul, MN
The Breck Mustangs used a balanced attack and solid goaltending and defense in winning the final Class A quarterfinal in Saint Paul Thursday night by a score of 3-0 over the Rochester Lourdes Eagles.
Led by two goals from Mike Moran, and one from Joe Rehkamp, the Mustangs speed and hustle ultimately wore down the Eagle attack, keeping Loudes goaltender Nick Heimer busy all night, who was solid with 28 saves to his credit.
Breck hit the scoreboard just :21 seconds into the second period, when Joe Rehkamp buried an even-strength shot home, giving the Mustangs an early lead in the second stanza. Mike Morin extended the Breck lead at 6:10 of the second period, knocking in a powerplay goal during a 5-3 two-man advantage for the Mustangs.
Play remained balanced throughout the majority of this one, with quality chances coming from both sides. Not to be ignored were the quality efforts turned in from both goaltenders, who did a great job in keeping this game close throughout. John Russell notched the shutout, turning 20 Eagle shots aside, and Nick Heimer was consistent all evening, steering 28 pucks away from his net.
In the end, it was the consistent pressure from the Breck Mustangs that sealed the win, evident in their steady increase in shots as the game wore on (5-12-14-total 31). In respect to Rochester Lourdes, they will certainly look back on an 0-7 Powerplay effort, and the missed opportunities they had on the man advantage.
Breck moves to 26-3-1 on the season, and will face the Little Falls Flyers at 1 pm Friday. Rochester Lourdes falls to 20-9, and moves to Mariucci Arena to face Virginia at 12 pm Thursday.
Nick Heimer on his effort in net: “Playing my game helps really get the jitters out. As soon as you see those first couple shots, you gotta play like you normally play”
John Russell on his shutout: “ I didn’t have to make too many tough shots tonight, we kept their attempts to the outside, and the D did a great job in front of me”
