It was thorough and controlling in every way imaginable as the Breck Mustangs hammered the Little Falls Flyers by a score of 6-1 in the State semifinals. With a large crowd assembled at the second Class A semifinal game, the crowd came to watch Ben Hanowski add to his impressive five-goal total in this year's State Tournament.
He was held scoreless, although he added and assist to the score sheet as he set up linemate Wesley Waytashek for their lone goal. It came at 6:27 of the third period with his team down by a 5-1 margin. The game was all about the defensive corps of the Mustangs who are quick and sound with the puck. The loss was the first of the season for the Flyers.
They scored goals off the rush, precipitated by the defense, and then again off one on one battles. Chase Nystedt scored the game's first goal off a battle from the end boards as Charlie Borer and Wes Iverson engaged in a tough battle. Nystedt punched home a pass from the end boards as he was blasted the puck past Michael Sperl.
The game went into the first intermission with the Mustangs leading 1-0 . Midway through the second period, the back-breaking goal was scored by Tyson Fulton who took the puck on the power play from behind the goal and walked up the right boards. As he gained speed and energy, he was checked inside the Flyers line and the puck carried through to the end boards. Fulton hustled down after the puck after he was checked, and pulled the puck off the goal line. As he walked to the backhand he tucked a beautiful shot into the top shelf over the glove hand of Sperl.
The wind fell out of the sails of the Flyers as the Mustangs took control of the game as they opened it up. Joe Rehkamp, Mike Morin, and Chase Nystedt all added third period goals to pull away with the impressive 6-0 win. The Mustangs (26-3-1) advanced to the State Class A Final and will play the Warroad Warrios (28-2-0). The Flyers were handed their first loss of the season as they fell to 29-1-0 and will play the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders (26-3-1) in the third place game Saturday.
