Elite League rosters finalized

Wayzata led the way with six players, including goaltender Vaughan Ahrens, as Upper Midwest High School Elite League rosters were finalized on Tuesday, July 23.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Blaine, East Grand Forks, state Class 2A runner-up Hill-Murray and Holy Family Catholic each finished with five players on league rosters.

The Elite League released its list of skaters on Friday, followed by Tuesday’s naming of the 12 goaltenders selected to play on six teams.

Among the top returning players are Tyler Sheehy of Burnsville, who scored 11 goals and added 12 assists in 20 games last season, Spencer Naas of Benilde-St. Margaret's (8 goals, 14 assists) and Steven Spinner of Eden Prairie (10 goals, 11 assists).

Wayzata’s contingent also includes defensemen Alex Stevens and Chandler Lindstrand and forwards Matthew Freytag, Jack Sorensen and Max Zimmer. The Trojans finished fourth at the state tournament in March.

Eagan, state Class 2A champion Edina, Eden Prairie, state Class 1A champion St. Thomas Academy and Warroad each had four players selected. Eagan’s total includes junior goaltender Andrew Lindgren, and Eden Prairie also had a goalie selected in junior Jake Kielly.

Hill-Murray, the state Class 2A runner-up each of the past two seasons, landed forwards Mitch Slattery, Joey Anderson, Tyler Funk and Willie Brown and defenseman Jacob Olson on elite league rosters.

Anderson is the league’s lone freshman, while Wayzata’s Zimmer is one of 10 sophomores.
