Minnesotans set sights on Sochi

Four Mr. Hockey winners among state contigent invited to U.S. national team camp

Fourteen players with Minnesota ties, including 10 who played high school hockey in the state, have been invited to the U.S. Men’s National Team Orientation Camp from Aug. 26-27 at the Kettler Capitals IcePlex in Arlington, Va.

Included in the group of Minnesotans hoping to earn spots on the U.S. team that compete in the 2014 Winter Games set for Feb. 7-23 in Sochi, Russia, are defensemen Jake Gardiner of Minnetonka, Nick Leddy of Eden Prairie, Paul Martin of Elk River and Ryan McDonagh of Cretin-Derham Hall and forwards David Backes of Spring Lake Park, Nick Bjugstad of Blaine and T.J. Oshie of Warroad. All seven were Mr. Hockey finalists, and Martin (2000), McDonagh (2007), Leddy (2009) and Bjugstad (2010) each won the award given annually to the state’s top senior skater.

Other former Minnesota high school players invited to the camp are defensemen Justin Faulk (South St. Paul) and Erik Johnson (Holy Angels) and forward Blake Wheeler (Breck).
