It would have been easy to miss last week’s beginning of the boys’ hockey and basketball seasons.

With football still a high priority — the Prep Bowl is yet to be played — and the anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday, it would have been easy to miss last week’s beginning of the boys’ hockey and basketball seasons. Here a quick recap of some of the action that took place involving west metro teams:

Boys’ hockey

Edina 3, Wayzata 1: Easily the biggest game of the week matched Edina, ranked second in Class 2A, against No. 1 Wayzata in the finals of the Wayzata Turkey Trot. Most of the action took place in a second period in which four goals were scored, a combined 24 shots on goal were fired and nine penalties were called. After spotting Wayzata a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Luke Patterson, Edina struck back with shorthanded goals from Garrett Wait and Cullen Munson barely three minutes apart. Wait added an even-strength goal late in the period.

Breck 5, Mahtomedi 1: The Mustangs, the No. 2 team in 1A, stormed back from a 1-0 deficit with five unanswered goals in Saturday’s opener. Michael Orke scored twice and Dalton Weigel had a goal and an assist.

Maple Grove 4, Holy Family 3: Holy Family outshot the Crimson 41-28, but Maple Grove pulled out the victory on a goal by Sam Valerius with two seconds remaining in the third period. Holy Family had tied the score 21 seconds earlier on a goal by Will Garin.

Boys’ basketball

Holy Angels 69, Mound-Westonka 63: A new-look Holy Angels team, minus departed players Delshon Strickland and Jordan Dembley and coach Larry Fitzgerald, got 27 points from Charlie Koontz in holding off the White Hawks.

Minnetonka 91, Minneapolis Southwest 70: The Skippers got 33 points from junior guard Justin Moes.
