Brandon and Luke combine for seven points to help No. 4 Bengals skate past conference foe Maple Grove.

Like it is with most brothers, there’s some sibling rivalry going on in the Notermann family.

Brandon, a senior, and Luke, a sophomore both center their respective lines for No. 4-ranked Blaine, and they always try to one-up each other on the scoresheet.

“There’s always competition between us,” Luke said.

The two brothers combined for seven points in Thursday’s 9-3 rout of Northwest Suburban Conference rival Maple Grove during the quarterfinals of the Sports Authority Holiday Classic at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. Luke recorded two goals and an assist while his older brother scored twice and dished out two assists.

It took just over two minutes for Brandon to score the Bengals' first goal when his off-angle shot trickled past Crimson goalie Cal McKenney.

“We wanted to have a fast start because traditionally it seems that we don’t play real well after Christmas,” Blaine coach Dave Aus said. “Particularly last year we were pretty slow starting after the holidays.”

There was no slow start this year, though, as Blaine added three more goals in the opening period, including one from Luke Notermann on the power play.

The two brothers played together on varsity last year as well, and Brandon tops Luke in the points department this season with 19. His little brother has 12.

“Yeah, there’s a bit of animosity between the two of us,” Luke said.

Not too much, however, as Brandon decided to help his brother out Thursday when he made a pass to Luke in the slot, who fired the one-timer for a goal.

“Our guys were actually yelling for Brandon to get off the ice because he’d been out there for a little bit, and he all of a sudden gives it to Luke and he scored,” Aus said.

Both play center and contribute on the power play, too.

“Both those guys play well," Aus said. "They’re both centers for a reason because they’re dependable and hard workers. They do a good job.”
