After an up-and-down opening two weeks leading to a 2-3 start, the Panthers have gone 14-0-1.

At the start of the hockey season, Trent Eigner was eager to see how is young but talented Lakeville North boys’ squad would respond to the rigors of a strenuous schedule.

After an up-and-down opening two weeks leading to a 2-3 start, the Panthers have gone 14-0-1.

“There was so much excitement in training camp,” Eigner said. “Then we got nicked up in a hurry, and were missing some kids. We weren’t healthy.”

The Panthers are playing as well as any team in the state. They shut out Class 2A, No. 1 Hill-Murray 3-0 during the run, and have moved up to No. 3 in the Let’s Play Hockey poll.

“The most critical part of our success is our depth,” Eigner said. “We constantly play three lines, six defensemen and two goalies. We have three quality lines and are tough to defend.”

They have also become tough to score on, allowing only 17 goals in their last 14 games. The Panthers, with just six seniors, gave up 24 goals in their first six games.

“We’ve cleaned up some of our early season mistakes in our defensive end,” Eigner said. “We’re getting contributions from everybody.”

Eleven players have at least four goals, led by junior Jack Poehling’s 19. Six players have at least 20 points.

“We’ve played a lot of the top teams in the state [eight of the Top 20],” Eigner said. “It lets us see exactly how we measure up against them.”

South Suburban sweep

Eagan/Eastview, behind brother-sister Tommy and Sally Anderson, swept the South Suburban Conference alpine skiing championships last Thursday at Buck Hill.

Tommy was the boys’ medalist with a time of 40.07 seconds. Jack Lindsay of Burnsville was the runner-up in 41.46.

Sally garnered the girls’ individual championship with a time of 44.18. Annalise Iwen of Bloomington Jefferson finished second, more than two seconds back of the winner.
