After playing one of its best periods of the season, the STMA boys hockey team fell to pieces in a second period most people would find hard to describe.

“It was an emotional game, it’s a rivalry and we got too emotionally involved, I think and took some penalties that we shouldn’t have taken,” coach Jerr Johnson said.

The first period of Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Bison started the scoring as senior Connor Spetz scored on a slap shot to start off Senior Knight (Mitch Bourgerie, Connor Smith). Minutes later, after a fight nearly broke out, the Bison tied it as Gunnar Goodmanson scored his first goal of the night (Jerame Schuetzle, Mike Sawdey).

The second period is where things got gradually ugly. Tucker Bjorlin gave STMA the lead courtesy of a pass from Connor Greenwood, but it was all Buffalo after that. Jake Ramsey tied the game only a minute after the Bjorlin goal (Goodmanson, Justin Laven).

2-2 was still the score until late in the period when Goodmanson scored his second goal (Ramsey). Jake Michalko extended the lead to two with a goal moments later (Wilson Anderle, Hunter Thompson).

After the Michalko goal, the Knights gave in to their frustrations. Cody Reckard took a penalty for roughing and Tyler Hayes took a penalty for reacting to the Reckard penalty call (unsportsmanlike conduct). The 5 on 3 power play led to Goodmanson’s third goal and his fourth point of the night.

After Ramsey scored on another power play, the score was 6-2 and goaltender Kyle Hayden reacted with frustration after leaving the ice. Jack Kelly slapped one past Buffalo’s goalie Mikey Otten to give the Knights hope, but Buffalo ultimately won the game 8-4.

Coach Johnson said his team hurt itself with too many penalties (12, to be exact).

“It’s one thing to go down on a 5 on 4, but we went on a 5 on 3 there twice for an extended amount of time and that just absolutely is what cost us.”

CAMBRIDGE-ISANTI

St. Michael-Albertville’s Saturday game flipped the script from its Thursday game where the Knights scored eight in a rout of Cambridge-Isanti.

42 seconds into the game, Bourgerie opened the scoring for the Knights (Trevor Zins, Eric Sjelin). The score was 1-0 after one period. STMA scored the first five goals in this game, including all four in the second period.

Logan Nelson netted the first goal in the second period (Greenwood, T. Bjorlin). Minutes later, Zins scored a power play goal (Nelson, Matt Kisch). Smith made it 4-0 just moments after that (Kisch). Finally, Nelson scored his second goal to cap the period (Kisch, Casey Crandall).

In the third, Cambridge-Isanti finally scored, as Elliott Simon broke the shutout (Jared Konen, Jacob Sylvester). However, the Knights answered back with three more goals. Nelson secured a hat trick (Bjorlin, Kelly), Spetz scored a shorthanded goal (Hayes, Cam Fuerstenberg), and Nelson scored his fourth (Bourgerie, Kelly).

Coach Jerr Johnson was extremely pleased with the offensive output from the team.

“We scored a lot of goals, so it was a good night for us.” The Knights outshot CI 45-14.

The Knights return to action on Thursday at St. Cloud Tech. STMA plays again on Super Bowl Eve at Chisago Lakes.
