As the saying goes, it’s just kids being kids.

With the up-and-down physical and emotional nature of high school athletes, their performances often vary widely from game to game. It’s part of the reason we’ve seen so many upsets and shake up of the top 10 rankings in both Class 2A and 1A this winter.

That’s what makes the annual performances of Mike Randolph’s Duluth East program and the rising Lakeville North program under coach Trent Eigner so impressive. East has been consistently excellent for the past two decades under Randolph. North has done the same all this winter under Eigner. Now the legendary master tactician up north and the detail-oriented planner in the south go head-to-head in what could be a Class 2A state tournament preview this Thursday — and is our top game of the week of Feb. 3-9, 2014.
