Dylan Malmquist is making special teams his specialty.

His shorthanded goal in the first period marked the second consecutive game he helped trump an opponent’s advantage.

Malmquist’s goal gave Edina a 3-0 lead and greatly reduced Stillwater’s comeback chances in the Hornets’ eventual 6-1 quarterfinals victory. His shortie against Bloomington Jefferson in last week’s section final had a similar effect.

“Our philosophy is to play good defense first but to be ready if an offensive opportunity presents itself,” said Malmquist, who also assisted on three goals.

Said Stillwater forward Brandon Jungmann: “When they popped that shortie, it kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

Fire away

Roseau coach Andy Lundbohm was asked whether Lakeville North’s trio of Poehling brothers embodied the instinctual, creative playing style so prominent in northern Minnesota playing.

“Northern guys shoot more — like this guy,” said Lundbohm, gesturing toward Rams senior Zach Yon.

And how.

Yon accounted for 14 of Roseau’s 30 shots on goal in Thursday’s 2-1 overtime loss to Lakeville North. He did not score but assisted on Alex Halstengard’s goal. Yon, a Mr. Hockey finalist committed to North Dakota, has 39 goals and 42 assists this season.

“He’s a fantastic player,” Lundbohm said. “They kept an eye on him and leaned his way. But he’s strong and has a tremendous shot.”

Snuggerud guts it out

A broken bone in his hand hasn’t stopped Eden Prairie defenseman Luc Snuggerud. He logged regular ice time in Thursday’s quarterfinal, picking up an assist on the eventual game-winning goal.

“It will take a lot to hold him out,” Eagles coach Lee Smith said. “He’s tough and gritty and a hero to our whole group.”

Snuggerud suffered the injury in the Section 6 final against Benilde-St. Margaret’s. He was awarded the Reed Larson Award as the state’s top senior defenseman earlier this week.
