Three games will be played on the Holman Field airport tarmac

Hockey Day Minnesota, a celebration of the state’s favorite winter pasttime, returns to the capital city.

The Minnesota Wild, along with FOX Sports North and Minnesota Hockey, announced the outdoor high school games for the ninth-annual Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota will take place on Saturday, Jan. 17, on the tarmac at St. Paul’s Holman Field airport.

The first game will feature established and emerging programs. The St. Paul Johnson boys’ high school team, whose program celebrated 100 years last season, will face off against Luverne, whose boys’ team made its first Minnesota State High School League tournament appearance last year.

The second game features perennial state tournament teams St. Thomas Academy and Hill-Murray. The final game at Holman Field will feature the girls’ teams from Cretin-Derham Hall and the Duluth Northern Stars.

Hockey Day Minnesota will be capped off as the Minnesota Wild face off against the Arizona Coyotes at 8 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center, a half mile from Holman Field.

The outdoor games will be played on a refrigerated rink. Proceeds of the event will benefit St. Paul Youth Hockey and Serving Our Troops. Ticket information for Hockey Day Minnesota 2015 will be announced at a later date.
