WINONA — It was deemed ugly by coach Brad Ryan, but the Faribault High School boys hockey team likely doesn’t care about beauty points.

The Falcons are one win away from their first Big 9 Conference title in history.

FHS dominated Winona by a 6-1 count Thursday on the road, a game that featured 20 penalties and produced so many stoppages in play that it took more than two and a half hours to complete.

“It was not your typical hockey game,” Ryan said.

The Falcons (16-6, 7-1 Big 9) maintained its perch atop the Big 9 Conference with the win. Since they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with Rochester Century, a win next Thursday at home against Rochester Mayo would ensure FHS at least a share of the conference crown.

FHS took a 4-0 lead in the second and never looked back. The Falcons had control of the game from the start, out-shooting the Winhawks (14-6-1, 5-3) 45-17.

Sophomore Brandon Parker had two goals and an assist. Junior Sean Lipinski had a goal and an assist, while Nick Murray, Bo Putrah and Brandon Teske each scored once.

Colbey Hullett and Geroge Richie each had two assists. Senior goalie Wyatt Andreas steered away 16-of-17 Winhawks shots in the win.
