The Dodge County Wildcat boys’ hockey team has been playing tough hockey as of late. With a long, nine-day break for the holidays, they should be ready and rejuvenated to take the ice at the Kiwanis Tournament on December 29.

Head Coach Eric Hofmann stated that during these games, he will still be looking for ideal line arrangements to maximize chemistry. “We are closer and closer to having established our lines for the season. It’s all about finding that chemistry of who plays well with who and then developing that chemistry,” he stated.

Taking it back a few weeks, the Wildcats made the Trek up to the Parade Ice Arena in Minneapolis on December 13. Although they took the loss, Minneapolis is ranked second in the standings. The final score was tallied at 6-2.

In this game, Grant Badger and Colton Goodman were the players to score goals for the Wildcats. Daytin Freerksen and Kevin Claussen contributed assists as well. According the the scorebook, Minneapolis won through the disparity in the ‘Shots on Goal’ column, outshooting the Wildcats 45-6.

Following this game, Dodge County hosted St. Paul Como Park, in what would be their second matchup of the season with this team.

From the opening puck drop, one would think they were in for a blowout. Two Wildcat goals were scored in the first four minutes of the game. Nic Leisen scored off an assist from Austin Lewis with just over one minute off the clock in the first period. Two minutes later, Brendan Rohlik dished to Ben Colvin for the second unanswered goal.

Later in this same period, however, Como Park scored two unanswered goals of their own to tie the game at two.

Into the second period, the score remained tied until Ian Tully scored his second goal of the day on a power play. This goal would be the last one of the day for both teams, marking the final score as a 3-2 win for St. Paul Como park.

After these two losses, Dodge County traveled to Richfield where they were able to part from their losing streak. Defense was strong for Dodge County when it wasn’t for Richfield. Likewise, offense was strong for them when it wasn’t for Richfield as well. The Wildcats found the back of the net five times, while shutting out Richfield making the final score 5-0.

Team Assistant Captain and Byron Senior Austin Lewis spoke regarding the team’s efforts this season. “When the effort is there and everyone does their job we really work well together to put tougher teams to work,” he said. “Playing South St. Paul was the start of this push. We really made them work for their win.”

In order to rip off a win streak, Hofmann says the team needs to “compete and give 100% effort for all three periods, limit our team penalties per game, execute our D-Zone with no major breakdowns and/or limit our major breakdowns per game, as well as create and execute offensive pressure for three full periods.”

The Wildcats are participating in the Kiwanis Hockey Tournament, which will last from December 29 to 31. Matchups are to be determined.
