Josh Passolt, a senior captain, tallied five goals and one assist as the Crimson dropped Champlin Park 14-1 on Jan. 3.

Teams on both sides of a blowout generally prefer to move on without further discussion, but Maple Grove hockey player Josh Passolt’s big night is worth noting.

Passolt, a senior captain, tallied five goals and one assist as the Crimson dropped Champlin Park 14-1 on Jan. 3.

He ranks as the first Crimson hockey player to score five goals in a game. Passolt also became the seventh hockey player in program history to eclipse 100 points for his career.

Passolt scored a hat trick in the first period and added two more goals in the second period.

Heading into games this week, he leads the Crimson with 13 goals and 18 assists.

Facon shines on court

Centennial sophomore Alex Facon led the boys’ basketball team to a pair of Northwest Suburban Conference victories last week, defeating Anoka and No. 4 Maple Grove.

Facon scored 14 points and sank several clutch free throws against Anoka. Facon then led the Cougars with a career-high 28 points plus seven rebounds against Maple Grove.

True Team swimming section meet is Saturday

Boys’ swimming and diving programs throughout Minnesota will compete in the True Team section meet on Saturday.

In True Team section and state meets, all 84 entrants on each team count toward the team score. By comparison, team titles in Minnesota State High School League state meets can be won by a handful of top-end swimmers.

Teams qualifying as section champions or wild cards will advance to the True Team state meet on Jan. 24 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Class 1A meet begins at 1 p.m. and the Class 2A starts at 6 p.m.

Last season Anoka placed eighth in the Class 2A meet, two spots ahead of Maple Grove. Spring Lake Park finished 10th in Class 1A.
