The Orono Spartans are rolling on a four game winning streak that was capped off with Senior Night against Waconia.

First, the Spartans traveled to Hutchinson to take on the Tigers on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The last time the two teams faced off, Orono came away with the win, and Hutchinson was eager for a rematch.

The first goal of the game came at 5:59 in the period from senior Trip Renard with assists going to Seniors Will Dittrich and Joey Luedtke. Minutes later, Hutch answered back to tie up the game.

Renard again crashed the net and found another goal with assists again from Dittrich and senior Ryan Baskfield to bring the game 2-1 going into first intermission.

The second period was full of scoring from both squads. Shortly into the second period, Renard capped off his hat trick with a third goal, with assists from Dittrich once more as well as Luedtke.

Once again, Hutch answered back, but this time with three more goals to bring the score to 4-3, Hutch.

The Orono coach felt the time was right to call a timeout, and made an effort to settle his troops. This decision would soon prove to be a wise choice.

Towards the end of the period, Hutch drew a penalty and sophomore Mark Willson was able to hammer one in on the weak side of the power play with help from Luedtke and Renard. No more then a minute later, Orono was again on the power play, and Willson buried another one from the same spot on the ice. This brought the game to 5-4 in Orono’s favor at the end of the second period.

The Spartans knew they had to hold onto their lead during the third period, and they did just that. Within the first minute of the period, Dittrich found the back of the net with assists from his line mates Luedtke and Renard.

Orono again found themselves on the power play and senior Logan Kinsel was able to cap off the scoring with assists from senior Will LeNeave and junior David McCuskey.

Hutch was able to sneak one last power play goal in to bring the final 7-5 Orono. Renard came away with 5 points and Dittrich chipped in 4.

Friday, Feb. 6 was Senior Night for Orono. During the first intermission of their home game against the Waconia Wildcats, Orono honored its seniors.

Orono has 10 seniors on its squad this year, including Ryan Baskfield, Will Dittrich, Will LeNeave, Joey Luedtke, Cole Goulet, Alex Sellers, Trip Renard, Logan Kinsel, Zach Robinson and Jonathan Flakne. Flakne had a great game and every other senior had at least a point in the game.

Luedtke started off the scoring for the night with assists from Renard and McCuskey on a power play. Shortly after, LeNeave followed suit with assists from junior Riley Vieth and Kinsel.

At the end of the first period, Waconia was able to take advantage of a loose puck in front of the net to sneak one past Flakne.

That would be Waconia’s only goal of the evening. This was the Spartan’s show. It was 2-1 going into first intermission.

The second period had the heaviest scoring; Orono racked up a whopping total of 5 goals.

The first of the period came from Renard with help from Luedtke and LeNeave on a power play. The next was from LeNeave and Junior Dylan Sande.

McCuskey wasn’t about to be left out and buried one with help from Sellers. Next up was Dittrich on the power play from Luedtke and sophomore Alex Dau.

Senior Cole Goulet capped off the fifth goal of the period and 7th goal of the game with assists from Sellers and Renard. This brought the game 7-1 going into the third period.

The Spartans again stole the show during the third period. The Waconia goal tender coughed up a rebound and tried to cover it, but lost it; McCuskey was there to bury it unassisted.

Up next was Vieth with a beauty from seniors Baskfield and Robinson. Rounding out the scoring to a nice even 10 was Goulet from Dittrich and Luedtke to bring the final score to 10-1.

The Spartans are now 14-8-1 going into the week of Feb. 9. The Spartans travel to Delano on Tuesday, Feb. 10 for a rematch against the Tigers for what could be a share of the Wright County Conference title and a possible #2 Seed in Section 2A play.

The Spartans will finish their regular season at home against Litchfield on Friday, Feb. 13.
