David La Vaque has covered all but one state hockey tournament game since 2009 and has worked as a Star Tribune high school sports reporter since 2004. His favorite tournament experiences include cheering for alma mater St. Paul Johnson in 1991 and staying for most of the Apple Valley/Duluth East marathon semifinal game in 1996. Loren Nelson has covered every state tournament since 2009 as the national media editor for Sport Ngin. He attended many, many other Tourney games as a high schooler from the far northern reaches of Minnesota making the annual pilgrimage south to the old St. Paul Civic Center in the 1980s.

Day 4 at the X. Energy levels still high, although not quick enough to snag a donut from the snack table on press row before they disappeared. Twice. Probably a good thing.

Gotta give a plug here to Hub photographer Nick Wosika, who has been busting his ... the last three days doing some awesome, awesome work. Knowing how tough their job is, I have always had a huge appreciation for pro shooters and the amazing shots they get.

Duluth East has, hands down, been the story of the tournament, so I dropped in one of Nick's photos of Ash Altmann above. I also pulled one of Nick's shots of Hermantown and plugged it in below as a nod to the Hawks' mind-boggling run of six straight Class 1A title game appearances.

Also loaded a photo gallery of some of Nick's favorites at the bottom of the page.
