Nov. 28: The Rams renew a series that has had thrilling anthologies despite being dominated by the Warriors recently.

The Warroad-Roseau rivalry, so rich with its long history, isn't limited to just the boys' programs. The girls’ teams have developed their own chronicle of thrilling matchups, with the games usually being decided by one goal and often times requiring overtime to decide the winner.

The Rams and Warriors face off twice each regular season but also used to play in Class 1A, Section 8 and met in the title game in 2008 and 2009.

Roseau escaped that first section tilt with a 3-2 win. Warroad recorded a 2-1 overtime victory the next season in a game that had parents too nervous to watch. It was the third overtime game between the teams that season and remains as the highlight of the rivalry, a moment when both programs assembled their most talented teams.

The Rams had Abby Ness, Katie Olson, Mary Loken and Kylie Lane. Ness and Lane played at St. Cloud State while Olson and Loken went to North Dakota after high school.

The Warriors featured Lisa and Layla Marvin and Kayla Gardner, a trio that played at North Dakota after graduating.

Gardner scored the game-winner in the section title game, and Warroad went on to finish as the Class A state runner-up after losing to Blake 4-3 in the championship. The Warriors appeared in the next four state tournaments, winning the title in 2010 and 2011 and finishing second in 2013.

Warroad has defeated Roseau in 15 of their last 16 meetings - all in the regular season - since that memorable matchup, but the Rams recorded a 4-1 victory last year.

The Warriors, however, responded with a 4-3 overtime win in the regular-season finale.

Roseau and Warroad renew their rivalry this season and is a matchup worthy of being our Top Game of the Week.
