Not often in high school hockey do games end in 0-0 ties. Buffalo and Mounds View pulled the trick in the final game Dec. 31 in the three-day Schwan Cup Tournament in Blaine.

The game ended with Buffalo earning the seventh-place championship by way of shootout. Junior Cade Stensby and senior Kevin Kemp scored shootout goals and Bison senior Taylor Strenge capped off his memorable varsity debut by stopping both shots in the shootout. Strenge stopped 35 of 35 shots earning the shutout.

“It felt really good to get that shutout,” said Strenge, who despite the shutout, was unable to notch the win as the game officially goes down as a tie.

Buffalo ended the tournament without a victory, but following a 7-1 first-round loss to No. 1 rated Breck on Dec. 29, and a 5-4 defeat Dec. 30 to Lakeville South, the mood afterwards was positive.

“We came in hoping to do a lot better in the tournament than seventh place, but we knew we had a tough first game against Breck,” Strenge said. “We all felt great after the game. We were on a four-game losing streak, and that game ended it.”

The Bison had previously lost a pair of one-goal games, 2-1 to No. 7 Wayzata, and 3-2 to conference rival Rogers.

“I wouldn’t call the tournament a disappointment,” Strenge said. “We definitely gained momentum to make a hard push to do well for the last half of the season.”

HOME WIN

Buffalo ended its five-game winless streak with a 2-1 home victory Tuesday, Jan. 5 over Champlin Park.

Kemp scored both goals, including the game winner 3:37 into the third period for the Bison. The game was delayed nearly an hour in the first period as Champlin Park junior forward Neil Theisen suffered a scary injury on a breakaway play where Bison senior Michael Sawdey was given a five-minute major and game miscondut for boarding. Theisen suffered a broken femur on the play.

The Bison (4-6-2, 2-1-1 M8) succesfully killed the major penalty.
