The Thunderhawks' senior forward now has two dramatic winning goals in as many games.

David La Vaque has covered all but one state hockey tournament game since 2009 and has worked as a Star Tribune high school sports reporter since 2004. His favorite tournament experiences include cheering for alma mater St. Paul Johnson in 1991 and staying for most of the Apple Valley/Duluth East marathon semifinal game in 1996. Loren Nelson has covered every state tournament since 2009 as the national media editor for Sport Ngin. He attended many, many other Tourney games as a high schooler from the far northern reaches of Minnesota making the annual pilgrimage south to the old St. Paul Civic Center in the 1980s.

Give Alex Adams an A-plus for his clutch scoring ability. The senior Grand Rapids forward grabbed the state spotlight on Thursday by scoring 2 minutes, 6 seconds in overtime to lift the Thunderhawks past Bemidji 3-2 in the state Class 2A quarterfinals.

Just a week earlier, in the Section 7 championship in Duluth, it was Adams scoring with 6 seconds left to propel Grand Rapids past Duluth East 6-5.

No situation, it seems, is too stressful for the Thunderhawks.

“We’ve got Alex Adams on our team, so we’re fine,” Grand Rapids coach Trent Klatt said after Thursday’s win.

For those who might not have seen it, Adams’ winning goal against Duluth East is shown in the video below.
