David La Vaque has covered all but one state hockey tournament game since 2009 and has worked as a Star Tribune high school sports reporter since 2004. His favorite tournament experiences include cheering for alma mater St. Paul Johnson in 1991 and staying for most of the Apple Valley/Duluth East marathon semifinal game in 1996. Loren Nelson has covered every state tournament since 2009 as the national media editor for Sport Ngin. He attended many, many other Tourney games as a high schooler from the far northern reaches of Minnesota making the annual pilgrimage south to the old St. Paul Civic Center in the 1980s.

Two-man Advantage presents the third installment of its daily 2016 All-Tournament Team selections:

FORWARDS
Casey Mittelstadt, Eden Prairie
The junior had a hand in five of the Eagles’ six goals, scoring three of them, as he laid the Grand Rapids defense to waste with his jaw-dropping speed and stickhandling. He has 11 points in two tournament games this year.

Logan Judnick, Hermantown
Although not necessarily one of the Hawks “name” forwards, the junior scored the backbreaking goal against St. Paul Academy early in the second period and added another goal in the third as the rout was well underway.

Griffen Ness, Wayzata
Sophomore fourth-liners don’t score game-winning goals in the closing minutes of a tourney semifinal. Ever. Yet there went Ness, streaking in a breakaway for his fourth goal of the season and first since early February as the Trojans outlasted Stillwater.

DEFENSEMEN
Dalton Weigel, Breck
The junior had two assists and shared the team lead with eight shots on goal, all while helping shut out Thief River Falls and its goal-scoring superstar Ethan Johnson.

Logan Lindstrand, Wayzata
The junior contributed a first-period goal that looked like it might hold up as the winner against Stillwater. He also contributed to the stellar defensive effort that kept the Ponies off the scoreboard until the final minute.

GOALIE
Alex Schilling, Wayzata
The senior’s last-second denial of Noah Cates to preserve the Trojans’ semifinal victory over Stillwater was brilliant in and of its self, never mind the numerous other point-blank attempts he turned aside among his 20 saves.

Linden Olness, Breck
Two state tourney games, zero goals allowed. Not bad for the sophomore who Mustangs coach Les Larson says he requires only, “to be good, not great.” Olness stopped 18 Thief River Falls shots in Friday’s Class 1A semifinals.
