North metro notebook: Elk River/Zimmerman hockey standouts make news

Two players with ties to the Elks’ program recently announced verbal college commitments on Twitter.

Summer is almost here, yet it’s the boys of winter making news from Elk River/Zimmerman.

Two players with ties to the Elks’ program recently announced verbal college commitments on Twitter. Junior defenseman Nick Perbix is headed for St. Cloud State. He scored six goals and added 20 assists this season. Younger brother Jack, a freshman forward, previously committed to Notre Dame.

Reggie Lutz, a 2015 graduate and high-scoring forward, will join former Elks teammate and Mr. Hockey winner Jake Jaremko at Minnesota State Mankato. Lutz tallied 30 goals in 57 games for Fairbanks of the North American Hockey League this season.

Stillwater names Gillespie girls’ hockey coach

Longtime Stillwater girls’ hockey assistant Lee Gillespie was named head coach of the Ponies’ program. Gillespie replaces Tony Scheid, who left the program in April citing personal attacks from unhappy parents.

True Team success

North metro track and field programs did not win team titles at the recent True Team state meet but several athletes earned individual accolades.

Class 3A winners were White Bear Lake’s Claire Odmark (400-meter dash) and Makala Keefe (discus throw), Elk River’s Christopher Udalla (triple jump) and Mounds View pole vaulters Julia Fixsen and Calvin Cignanik.

In Class 2A, Totino-Grace got winning performances from Kevin Dado (1,600) and Joseph Russell (triple jump).
