Penalty-filled game came down to self-control

Things got a little ugly during the third period of the Thurdsday, Dec. 2, matchup between Proctor and Mora.

There were 34 penalty minutes between the two teams in the final period alone, with a game total of 54 minutes.

Two Mora players received 10-minute game misconducts in the third period.

As the game got ugly, Proctor (2-0-0) took control. The Rails led by a goal after the second period, then scored five in the third period en route to a 9-3 triumph.

Surprisingly, only two of Proctor’s goals in the third were off of the power play.

Mora (0-1-0) dominated the beginning half of the first period, scoring on its first shot only 55 seconds into the game. The goal came from Chuck Anderson who was assisted by Jeremy Peterson.

Both teams had two penalties in the first period, and Proctor used momentum from killing two straight penalties to tie the game off of a Justin Scanlon goal. He was assisted on the play by Ian Ecklund.

Scanlon and Ecklund weren’t done yet, as it only took them 90 seconds into the second period to hook up again to put Proctor ahead 2-1. Scanlon finished with two goals and Ecklund finished with three assists.

“I just went out there and played hard,” Scanlon said about his performance, ”I felt good and it was a lot of fun out there.”

As the game progressed through the second and third periods, the play became more physical. It became apparent that whichever team stayed out of the box more was going to win.

Despite taking a few penalties of their own in the third, the Rails displayed better discipline.

“Just play smart, I told them if they have to take a cross-check or anything then do it,” Proctor coach Tim Schnobrich said. ”If you can’t do it then you should play an individual sport, you’re playing for twenty other guys on the bench, so if you take a penalty it hurts the whole team.”

Proctor’s Josh Lindburg scored with 13:36 left in the third period to give the Rails another two goal lead over the Mustangs. Proctor then scored another two goals during a 30-second span to put take a 7-3 lead and put the game out of reach.

Proctor travels to Blaine to take on Legacy Christian on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., while Mora is on the road again to play St. Michael-Albertville on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m.

Three Stars

1. Justin Scanlon, Proctor

Scanlon’s goals came during a two-minute span, with the first goal coming with 20 seconds left in the first and the next coming 90 seconds into the second. Scanlon has five points through the Rails' first two games.

2. Ian Ecklund, Proctor
Ecklund, a junior forward, assisted on three of Proctor's first four goals. Ecklund assisted on both of Scanlon’s goals and then on Tyler Pionk’s goal in the second period. Ecklund five points through two games, four of which are assists.

3. Chuck Anderson, Mora
A junior forward, Anderson was involved in two of Mora's three goals. He scored a goal and added an assist on Patrick Martin’s goal in the second period. Anderson opened the scoring, connecting on the game's first shot just 55 seconds into the first period.
